சுஜாதா- சில்லென்ற காலைப்பனி

பெயர் ராசியோ என்னவோ எனக்கு மிகப் பிடித்த பாடகிகளில் ஒருவர். புது வெள்ளை மழையிலிருந்து இவரது குரலுக்குத் தீவிர ரசிகன். சித்ரா இவரை விட சிறந்த பாடகி. ஆனால் சுஜாதாவை அதிகம் பிடிக்கக் காரணம் பள்ளிப் பருவதில் என் Dream Girlன் குரல் எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று கற்பனை செய்து வைத்திருந்த குரலுக்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமான குரல் இவருடையது. தற்போதைய Dream Girlன் சாரீரம் மட்டுமில்லாது சரீரத்தையும் கொண்டுள்ளார் ஷ்ரேயா கோஷால் 😉 பல நாட்கள் இவரது குரலை சித்ராவினுடையது என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். (பொதுவாகவே கேரளத்தின் அனேக ஆண் குரல்கள் ஜேசுதாசின் குரலைப் போலவும் பெண் குரல்கள் சித்ராவின் குரல் போலவும் இருக்கும்.) ஆனால் சித்ராவிற்கு முன்பே இளையராஜாவால் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப் பட்டவர் சுஜாதா. 10-12 வயது சிறுமியாக கவிக்குயில் படத்தின் ‘காதல் ஓவியம் கண்டேன்’ பாடல் மூலம் அறிமுகம் ஆகியிருந்தாலும் அப்பாடல் படத்தில் இடம் பெறாததால் ‘காயத்ரி’ திரைப்படத்தில் ‘காலைப் பனியில்’ பாடல் வெளிவந்து ஹிட் ஆனது. மீண்டும் ஸ்ரீதேவிக்கு ஜானியில் ‘ஒரு இனிய மனது பாடலை’ மிகவும் இனிமையாகப் பாடினார். இப்போதும் பலர் அப்பாடலைப் பாடியது ஜென்சி என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இளமைக் கோலம் படத்தில் மலேசியா வாசுதேவனோடு ‘நீ இல்லாத போது’ என்ற டூயட்டுக்குப் பிறகு 80களில் தமிழில் வேறு பாடல் பாடியதாக தெரியவில்லை.

ஆனால் இவருக்குப் பெரிய திருப்புமுனையாக அமைந்தது ரோஜா. அதற்குள் சித்ரா  தென்னிந்திய இசை சாம்ராஜ்யத்தின் இளவரசி ஆகியிருந்தார். ‘புது வெள்ளை மழை’ சுஜாதாவுக்கு மட்டுமின்றி உடன் பாடிய உன்னி மேனனுக்கும் ரீஎன்ட்ரி. காதல் ரோஜாவே பாடலில் வரும் ‘ல ல ல ல ல ல ல ல லா’ ஹம்மிங் அத்தனை இதம்.  புது வெள்ளை மழை போன்ற ஒரு அற்புதப் பாடலை இசையுலகில் கோலோச்சிக் கொண்டிருந்த சித்ராவைப் பாட வைக்காமல், புதியவரான ரஹ்மான் ஏன் சுஜாதாவிற்குக் கொடுத்தார் என்று  பலமுறை நினைத்திருக்கிறேன். அவரது குரலில் அதிகாலைப் பனித்துளியைப் போன்ற ஒருவித குளிர்ச்சி உண்டு. அவர் பாடினால் தீப்பொறிகூட சில்லென்று ஆகிவிடும்.

 
 தொடர்ந்து ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான் பல அருமையான பாடல்களை அவருக்குக் கொடுத்தார். நேற்று இல்லாத மாற்றம், ஆத்தங்கரை மரமே, போறாளே பொன்னுத்தாயி, நாளை உலகம் இல்லையென்றால் போன்ற பல பாடல்களுக்குப் பின்தான் சுஜாதா என்றவரைத் தெரிந்தது. அப்போது அம்மா சொன்னார் இவர் சிறுமியாக ஜேசுதாசுடன் பல கச்சேரிகளில் பாடியவர் என்று. இன்று போல் தொண்ணூறுகளில் ரியாலிட்டி ஷோக்கள் இல்லை. ஏ.வி. ரமணனின் சப்தஸ்வரங்கள் நிகழ்ச்சியில்தான் சுஜாதாவை முதன் முதலில் பார்த்தேன். சித்ரா பாடியது என்று நான் நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பல பாடல்களைப் பாடினார். அதன் பின் ராஜ் டிவியில் பி.எச்.அப்துல் ஹமீத் தொகுத்து வழங்கிய பாடகர்களின் நேர்காணல் நிகழ்ச்சியில் வந்தார். அவர் பாடலைக் கேட்பது இனிமை என்றால், பார்ப்பது இனிமையிலும் இனிமை. பொதுவாகவே சில பாடகர்கள் பாடுவதைப் பார்க்க சகிக்காது. ஆனால் காதுகளில் விரலை  வைக்காமல், கண்களைச் சுருக்காமல் மிக இயல்பாக உச்ச ஸ்தாயியில் மனதைக் கொள்ளைக் கொள்ளும் புன்னகையுடன் சுஜாதா பாடல்களை மிகவும் ரசித்துப் பாடும் அழகைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கலாம். திரு..மோகன் மிகவும் கொடுத்து வைத்தவர்.

காதலன் படத்தில் வரும் சிறு பாடலான ‘காற்றுக் குதிரையிலே’ பாட்டுக்கு உயிரையே தரலாம். என் வீட்டுத் தோட்டத்தில், சொட்ட சொட்ட நனையுது தாஜ் மஹால், சந்திரனைத் தொட்டது யார், பூ பூக்கும் ஓசை, பூவுக்குள் ஒளிந்திருக்கும், மெல்லிசையே, அதிசயம், முதல்முறை கிள்ளிப் பார்த்தேன் என்று பல பாடல்களைப் பாடினாலும் இளையராஜாவின் இசையில் ‘ஒரு பட்டாம்பூச்சி’ பாடல் என் மனதிற்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமானது. அப்பாடல் முதல் அவரது குரலை அடையாளம் கண்டு கொள்ள ஆரம்பித்தேன். பிறகு நினைத்த வரம் கேட்டு, காதல் நீதானா, மஞ்சள் பூசும் வானம் தொட்டு என்று ராஜாவுடன் மீண்டும் இணைந்தார்.  கார்த்திக் ராஜாவின் இசையில் கவிதைகள் சொல்லவா, தேசிங்கு ராஜா, காதல் வானொலி யுவன் ஷங்கர் ராஜா இசையில் இரவா பகலா, நெஞ்சோடு கலந்திடு, தீண்டித் தீண்டி; வித்யாசாகர் இசையில் உன் சமையல் அறையில், ஒ நண்பனே, தித்திக்குதே, அழகூரில் பூத்தவளே, ஆசை ஆசை, காற்றின் மொழி, etc அழகிய ராவணன் (மலையாளம்) படத்தில் ‘ப்ரனயமணித் தூவல் பொழியும் பவிழமழா’, பிரணயவர்ணங்கள் படத்தில் வரும் ‘வரமஞ்சள் ஆடிய ராவின்ட மாரில்’, Summer in Bethlehem படத்தில் எத்ரையோ ஜென்மமாய் போன்ற பாடல்கள் என் All Time Favourites. அனைத்து முன்னணி இசையமைப்பாளர்களிடமும் பாடியுள்ள இவர் ஹாரிஸ் ஜெயராஜின் இசையில் எனக்குத் தெரிந்து ரங்கோலா (கஜினி) பாடல் மட்டுமே பாடியுள்ளார்.  சமீபத்தில் இவர் ரஹ்மானுக்குப் பாடி அதிகம் கவனிக்கப் படாமல் போன அருமையான பாடல்கள் ‘நெஞ்சம் எல்லாம் காதல்’ மற்றும் குரு படத்தில் வரும் ‘ஏ மாண்புறு மங்கையே…’ 

 

கிரீடம் படத்தில் வரும் விழியில் பாடலை சுஜாதா பாடியது என்று பல நாட்கள் நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். பிறகுதான் தெரிந்தது அப்பாடலைப் பாடியது அவர் மகள் ஷ்வேதா என்று. குரல் மட்டுமின்றி உருவமும் தன் அம்மாவின் அச்சு அசல். ஆனாலும் ஷ்வேதாவைவிட சுஜாதா அழகு 😉 ஏர்டெல் சூப்பர் சிங்கர் நிகழ்ச்சியில் நடுவராக, போட்டியாளர்கள் மனதைப் புண்படுத்தாமல் மலையாளம் கலந்த தமிழில் அவர் சொல்லும் கமெண்ட்டுகளுக்காகவே விரும்பிப் பார்ப்பேன். எஸ்.பி.பி போல் இவர் குரலுக்கும் இன்னும் வயதாகவில்லை. சமீபத்தில் ஆடுகளம் படத்தில் வந்த ‘அய்யய்யோ’ பாடலில் எஸ்.பி.பி மற்று எஸ்.பி.சரண் இருவரையும் இணைந்து பாடவைத்துபோல், பிரஷந்தினிக்கு பதில் சுஜாதாவையும் ஷ்வேதாவையும் இணைந்து பாட வைத்திருக்கலாம். ஸ்ரீனிவாசுடனும்   உன்னி கிருஷ்ணனுடனும் சுஜாதா பாடும் டூயட் பாடல்கள் மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். எஸ்.பி.பி. போல சுஜாதாவின் குரலும் வயதாகாமல் எப்போதும் இளமையாகவே இருக்க வேண்டுகிறேன். Time Pass: பீகி பீகி ராத்தொன் மேன் என்ற கிஷோர் குமார்-லதாமங்கேஷகர் பாடிய ஆர்.டி.பர்மனின் அருமையான பாடலின் ரீமிக்ஸில் சுஜாதாவும் ஸ்ரீநிவாசும் பாடியது

 

பிற்சேர்க்கை: எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதாவிற்கும் பாடகி சுஜாதாவிற்கும் உள்ள ஒற்றுமைகள். இருவருக்கும் முதல் திரைப்படம் காயத்ரி. பாடகி சுஜாதாவின் ரீ எண்ட்ரியான ரோஜாவில் எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதா வசனம் எழுதினார். ஒருவகையில் அவருக்கும் விக்ரம் படத்திற்குப் பிறகு ரோஜா ஒரு ரீ எண்ட்ரிதான். எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதாவின் கடைசிப் படமான எந்திரனில் சுஜாதா பாடவில்லை என்றாலும் ஷ்வேதா பாடியுள்ளார். ரூம் போட்டு யோசிச்சது 🙂 

Enthiran – My View

The much awaited release of the year Endhiran is out and I’m so glad for watching it on the first day unfortunately not the first show. I would like to declare that I’m not a Rajini fan, a hardcore Kamalhaasan fan and I don’t like Masala movies. I don’t watch much Hollywood action flicks too. Despite all these things, I wished to watch Endhiran only for the immortal writer Sujatha who conceived the theme more than a decade back. Not even for Shankar whose stupendous imagination I always wonder. Since his previous film Sivaji is a 100% Rajinikanth movie for whom the director compromised a lot.

Writer Sujatha is a master in science fiction stories and had written about computers and robots when India was just introduced to the Television. His stories made the viewers of the 80s consider him as a prophet who predicted the computirized world long back. His sci fiction novels could not be made into films due to the whopping budget. After almost a decade it’s possible to make the film Endhiran (Robot). Thanks to director Shankar and crew and producer Kalanidhi Maaran for spending crores to make it happen.

This time Shankar didn’t come with his run of a mill “Corruption” and not even a Hi tech Romantic Comedy. The crux of Endhiran is what would happen if a powerful machine is abused. Man makes machines but they will bring destruction to him if misused. With this one liner,  Shankar has given an ultimate Feast with Technology of International standard spiced up with Indian ingredients. Alongwith that he has shown what would happen if a Robot, the ultimate invention of man gets the feelings like anger, happiness, sorrow and LOVE!

Shankar’s choice was Kamalhaasan after his team up with Kamal in Indian. Then he moved to Shah Rukh Khan. But Rajnikanth proved that none other than him would have been apt for the role of Chitti, the robot. He proves again and again that he is the one and only Super Star. Man, he rocks. If you are a Rajini fan who expects him to dance for an intro song with philosophy, to run around trees for duet songs, to say punch dialogues, to fly and bang the baddies,  to say about his entry in politics, etc. this film may disappoint you. There are no usual Rajini stuff and this is a 100% Director’s Movie. He has given himself to Shankar and had been a slave to him, doing whatever his master says. He jumps, flies, fights, dances, sings, romances and what not. Atlast he makes us feel for him.What a dedication! No one can believe that he’s 60, a senior citizen. 

I always like Rajini’s performances in negative roles or with grey shades (Avargal Ramanathan, Moonru Muichu Prasad, 16 Vayadhinile Parattai, Mullum Malarum Kaali, Thalapathi Surya) and some of his comedy roles (Thillu Mullu Indran/Chandran, Ninaithale Inikkum Deepak, Netrikkan Father character). In Endhiran, he does the role of a comedian and also a villain apart from hero. So I loved the movie, esp the last 45 minutes where  the robot, Chitti turns villain. The visuals literally made my jaws drop. After K.Balachander, Mahendran & S.P.Muthuraman, Shankar has extracted the best from Rajinikanth. Loved “Chitti” Rajini more than “Fletcher” Kamal 🙂

Aishwarya Rai is still the world’s most beautiful woman. She makes the perfect choice for Sana who can make even a Robot woo her. I could not take my eyes off her when she’s with the Scientist Rajini. She sets the screen wit fire in the “Irumbile ore irudhayam” song. Sooo Hottt!!! Ash is back!!!  But Chitti steals the show even when the gorgeous Aish is with him. Luckily she has more scope throughout the movie unlike other Rajini film heroines and she has utilized it at her best.

Note: Since I watchedin a very average theater, I could not experience the Visual and A.R.Rahman’s Background Score properly. So the rest would be after watching it in a better Cinema Hall.

 

Happy B’day Sujatha

Sujatha aka Rangarajan, the one person whom I wish I had a Master Brain like him. If I get a boon, I would choose his brain in my next birth. He was one of the most versatile writers of Tamil. He could talk/write on any topic- from Sanga Ilakkiyam to Science Fiction; from Naalaayiram Dhivya Prabandham to Nanotechnology; from Physics to Politics. I have never seen such a muti-faceted personality. I just love his way of writing. Be it a Short story, or a novel, or an essay or Movie Dialogues, he has made a Mark in each and every field. He’s the mentor to most of the writers especially most of the bloggers. Miss him and his writings so badly.

Dear Sujatha, though you are not with us, we celebrate your 75th Birthday with you in the form of your words.

“Vidai perumbodhu kaala manarparappil un kaal padhivugalai vittu sel“. You have kept your words. We can just try.

P.S: It’s so sad that Ananda Vikatan didn’t publish any article (Not even his old Short Story) about this great person who had been a pillar of Vikatan.

 

Sujatha – An Immortal Writer

Sujatha Rangarajan– The Man who inspired me a lot for writing. I was awe-inspired by his versatality. He has written in almost all genres, from Sangathamizh to Science Fiction; fromAganaanooru to Astro Physics; from Naalayiram Dhivya Prabandham to Nanotechnology. He was the first writer to introduce Computers to common man. He was a Prophet, who had predicted the computerized world in the early 70s. Being an Electronics Engineer, he started writing as an amateur author which gave him an Identity.

I came to know abt Sujatha from my mom when I was 10. There was a Scientific serial “En Eniya Iyandhira” that was telecast inDoordarshan on Mondays. He wrote about computers and Robotics in the 80s, which might be an inspiration for Director Shankar to make his magnum opus “Robo aka Endhiran”. (In fact, Robot was written for Kamal during his Indian days, with Preity Zinta as female lead. But due to the high budget and some other reasons, it was dropped.) That time I haven’t watched the movie Vikram which is based on Sujatha’s Scientific novel with the same title. As a small boy, I liked the Robot Jeeno of En Iniya Iyanthira.

Mom has told more about his novels that were made into films.Gayathri, Priya, Vikram, Karaiyellam Shenbagappoo Ratham Orey Niram (His only Historic Novel), etc. Ninaithale Inikkum’sstory was by Sujatha. Among which Karaiyellam Shenbagappoowas filmed exactly as the novel. But it would have been better if it was directed by a good director. His thriller novel came as a serial in DD “Kolaiyudhir Kaalam” that introduced me to Ganesh and Vasanth, the main characters created by him.

There are still many fans for ganesh and Vasanth. Ganesh is a calm and composed advocate; Vasanth is his naughty Junior and always talks about sex and the fairer sex. Director Vasanth changed his name for films because of the Vasanth character. Vivek played the role of Vasanth in Kolaiyudhir kaalam. In fact, he did full justice to the Vasanth. Once Sujatha said in an interview that he’s 50% Ganesh and 50% Vasanth. That is evident from his youthful writings.

Later actress Suhasini directed Sujatha’s crime novels as bi-weekly serials in Sun TV with actor Suresh as Ganesh and Vijay Adhiraj as Vasanth. Suresh with his wooden expressions spoiled the character of Ganesh whereas Vijay Adhiraj was just ok. Still i remeber an episode “Edhaiyum Oru Murai” where a psycho rich man wants to try everything in the world and eventually he would die by trying suicide. That’s “Edhaiyum Oru Murai”

I became an ardent reader of Sujatha when I was in 12th, via his“Katradhum Petradhum” in Anada Vikatan. He dealt with the topics, which normal man cannot think of. In my 2nd yr B.E., I joined a nearby Lending Library and started reading his books. I was taken aback by his Creativity and Imagination Skills that were far ahead of his age. His first novel “Nylon Kayiru” was wriiten in early 70s i think, but the style was so westernised. I like his Srirangathu Devadhaigal,Kanaiyaziyin Kadaisi Pakkangal, Pirivom Sandhippom (Both parts), Apsara, and almost all the stories with Ganesh and Vasanth. He implements Science and Technology in his stories. In early 80s, he had written about COBOL Programming language and its codings in his Apsara, which is about a Psycho Computer Programmer in Bangalore who kills by writing COBOL coding. He would be caught as there were very few programmers in Blore, but today??!! He had very good knowledge in Carnatic Music too.

He encouraged new talents and gave them recognition in his writings. Shankar and Mani Ratnam made use of him as Dialogue Writer works in Films like Indian, Mudhalvan, Boys, Kannathil Muthamittal, Aayidha Ezhuthu, Shivaji, and Endhiran (Concept of Sujatha).

P.S: This was written by me in my previous blog last year same day. Due to lack of time I just did CTLR+C & CTRL+V. Now I wonder how the man had time to write a lot inspite of having several other works.
