கண்டேன் மணிரத்னத்தை

நான் ஆதர்சமாக நினைக்கும் இரு இயக்குனர்களில் ஒருவரான இயக்குனர் மணி ரத்னந்த்தை நேற்று சத்யம் பல்திரையரங்கத்தில் இரண்டாம் முறையாக மதராசபட்டினம் பார்க்கச் சென்ற பொது கண்டேன். உடன் அவரது மனைவியும் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த நடிகைகளில் ஒருவரான சுஹாசினியும் வந்திருந்தார். இருவரும் Inception படத்தின் Preview Show காண வந்திருந்தனர். மேலும் பல பிரபலங்கள் (விஜயலட்சுமி, கிருஷ்ணா, நந்தா, நரேன்) வந்திருந்தும், மணியைப் பார்த்ததும் ஸ்தம்பித்துவிட்டேன். நடப்பது கனவா நனவா என்று தெரியாமல் சில நொடிகளுக்கு சிலை போல நின்று கொண்டிருந்தேன் (கடவுள் பார்த்த பக்தன் போல!) மணிரத்னம் திரையில் பார்த்தது போலவே வெள்ளை Cotton Shirt-ம் வெள்ளை தாடியுடனும் தனக்கே உரிய அறிவு ஜீவிக் களையுடன் இருந்தார். ஆனால் சுஹாசினியோ நேரில் கூடுதல் அழகோடு இருந்தார். பல கேமராக்கள் மின்னிக் கொண்டிருந்தும், நான் அவர்களை ஒரு photo எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று கூட தோன்றவில்லை. எனக்கு மிக மிக அருகில் கடந்து செல்லும்போதுதான் என் Cellphone- ஐ எடுத்து கிளிக்கினேன். கொஞ்சம் Blurred-ஆக வந்தாலும், காலத்துக்கும் என்னால் மறக்கமுடியாத புகைப்படம் ஒன்றை மனத்திரையில் படமாக்கினேன்.

மதரசபட்டினத்தின் முதல் இருபது நிமிடங்களை நான் பார்க்கவே இல்லை. மணியைக் கண்ட பரவசத்தை நண்பர்களுடன் SMS-ல் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தேன். Twitter, Facebook-ஐ சப்போர்ட் செய்யும் கைபேசி வாங்க வேண்டுமென உறுதி கொண்டேன். இனி வியாழக்கிழமைகளில் சத்யத்தில் படம் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று முடிவு செய்தேன்.

மதராசபட்டினம்

படத்தின் விளம்பரங்களே  ‘அட’ போட வைத்தன. இருந்தும் டைரக்டர் A.L.விஜய்யின் முந்தைய படங்களான கிரீடம் மற்றும் பொய் சொல்லப் போறோம் என்னை அதிகம் கவராததால் பெரிய எதிபார்ப்பு ஏதுமில்லை. இருந்தும் என்னை ஈர்த்த விஷயம் அதன் களம்.  மேலும் சென்னை எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த இடம் என்பதால் பழங்கால மதராசபட்டினதைக் காண வேண்டுமென்ற ஆவலே மேலோங்கி இருந்ததால் நான்கு நாட்கள் முன்பே ரிசர்வ் செய்து நேற்று சென்றேன்.

டைட்டில்களே பிரமாதம். லண்டனில் ஒரு முதியவரின் funeral -ல் ஆரம்பிக்கிறது கதை. முதியவரின் மனைவியான ஏமி ஸ்மித்தின் மூளையில் blood clot ஆகி உடனடியாக ஆபரேஷன் செய்ய  வேண்டிய நிலையில் அவர் மதராசபட்டினம் செல்ல வேண்டுகிறார். அங்கு அவர்  பேத்தியுடன் பரிதி என்பவரை கையில் ஒரு தாலியுடன் தேடுகிறார். சென்னை வந்ததும் அவருடைய flashback ஆரம்பமாகிறது. 1945 ல் மதராசபட்டினத்தில் ஆங்கிலேய கவர்னர் வில்கின்சனின் மகளான ஏமி அங்கு சலவைத் தொழிலாளி, மல்யுத்த வீரன் ஆர்யாவின் வீரத்தைக் கண்டு ரசிக்கிறாள். இருவருக்கும் இடையே மொழி, இன வேறுபாடுகளையும் மீறி காதல் மலர்கிறது.  ஏமிக்கும் Comissioner Robertக்கும் திருமணம் நிச்சயிக்கப் படுகிறது. ஆனால் கவர்னருக்கு இருவரின் காதல் பற்றி ஆகஸ்ட் 14-ம் தேதி தெரிய வருகிறது. ஆகஸ்ட் 15-ம் தேதி இந்தியாவிற்கு சுதந்திரம் என அறிவிக்கப் பட்ட நிலையில் வெள்ளையர்கள் அனைவரும் இங்கிலாந்து செல்லவேண்டிய நிலையில் முதலில் ஏமியையும் தன் மனைவியையும் டில்லிக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கிறார்.  விடிவதற்குள் பரிதியைக் கொல்லவும் உத்தரவிடுகிறார். வழியில் தப்பி வரும் ஏமி பரிதியைத் தேட, எமியைப் பரிதி தேட, இருவரையும் வெள்ளையர்கள் விரட்ட ஆகஸ்ட் 15 அன்று என்ன நடந்தது, இருவரும் சேர்ந்தனரா, ஏமி ஏன் இங்கிலாந்துக்குச் சென்றாள், மூதாட்டி ஏமி முதியவர் பரிதியைச் சந்தித்தாரா என்பதை விறுவிறுப்பான திரைக்கதையில் தொய்வின்றி சொல்லியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர்.

Period Film என்றாலே சற்று நீளமாகவும் சலிப்புறச் செய்வதாகவும் இருக்கும் என்ற எண்ணத்தை உடைத்தெறிந்திருக்கிறது இப்படம். அதுவும் முதல் பாதியின் ஒன்றரை மணி நேரம் போனதே தெரியவில்லை. ஆர்யாவும் ஏமியும் நன்கு நடித்துள்ளனர். நான் கடவுளை விட ஆர்யாவிற்கு இதில் அதிக Scope உள்ளது. அதை நன்றாக பயன்படுத்தியும் உள்ளார். சொல்லப்போனால் ஆர்யாவை விட ஏமிதான் score செய்கிறார். கொள்ளை அழகுடன் நம் மனதையும் கொள்ளை கொள்ளுகிறார். மொழி பெயர்ப்பாளராக வரும் ஹனீபா (அவரது கடைசி படம்), குஸ்தி வாத்தியாராக வரும் நாசர், ஆர்யாவின் நண்பர்கள், பாலசிங் அனைவரும் நிறைவாக நடித்துள்ளனர்.

படத்தின் இரு முக்கிய நாயகர்கள் – கலை இயக்குனர் செல்வகுமார் மற்றும் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் நீரவ் ஷா. 65 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னிருந்த மதராசபட்டினத்தை நம் கண் முன் வைக்கிறார். அன்றைய சென்ட்ரல் ஸ்டேஷன், ஸ்பென்சர் பிளாசா, டிராம் வண்டி, புகைவண்டி, கூவம் நதி, அதில் படகு சவாரி என அனைத்தையும் காட்டுவதில் நிறைய மெனக்கெடல் தெரிகிறது. அதனை மிக அழகாக மிகையின்றி ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்து நம் கண்களுக்கு விருந்து படைத்திருக்கிறார் நீரவ் ஷா. முழுவதும் flashback ஆக காட்டாமல், அன்றும் இன்றுமாக காட்சிப்படுத்திய விதம் நன்றாக உள்ளது. அதற்கு ஆண்டனியின் நேர்த்தியான படத்தொகுப்பு அருமை.

ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷின் இசையில் பூக்கள் பூக்கும் தருணம் மனதை வருடுகிறது. வாம்மா துரையம்மா பாடலில் உதித் நாராயணனிற்கு பதில் தமிழறிந்த பாடகர் பாடி இருந்தால் நன்றாக ரசித்திருக்கலாம். மேகமே மேகமே பாடலில் மாணிக்க விநாயகம், M.S.V இவர்களுடன் நாசர் விக்ரம் ஆகியவர்களைப் பாட வைத்து சபாஷ் பெறுகிறார். உச்சக்கட்டத்தில் chasing காட்சியில் வரும் காற்றிலே காற்றிலே பாடல் மிக அற்புதம். ஹரிஹரன் – Hats Off. சோனு நிகம் மற்றும் சைந்தவி பாடியுள்ள ஆருயிரே பாடல் சுமார். பின்னணி இசை  திருப்திகரமாக இல்லை. Period படத்திற்கு உண்டான பிரத்யேக இசை missing.

முதல் காட்சியிலிருந்து பல காட்சிகள் Titanic படத்தைப்போலவே அமைந்திருப்பது  ஒரு குறை. முதிய ஏமியின் flashback, அதில் Jack கொடுக்கும் Chainபோல், இதில் பரிதி கொடுக்கும் தாலி. ராபர்ட்டுக்கும் பரிதிக்கும் இடையே நடக்கும் மல்யுத்தப் போட்டி Lagaan படத்தை நினைவு படுத்துகிறது. பரிதியை ஆங்கிலேயர்களிடமிருந்து ஏமி காப்பாற்றுவது சமீபத்தில் Kites படத்தில் பார்பரா மோரி ஹ்ரிதிக்கைக் காப்பாற்றும் காட்சி போல் உள்ளது. இறுதியில் கொஞ்சம் Commercial படம் மாதிரி ஆகிவிட்டது. முதிய ஏமி தானாக பரிதியைத் தேடிப் போவதும், அங்கு அவள் காணும் காட்சிகளும் சற்று சினிமாத்தனமாக இருக்கிறது. நல்ல வேளையாக முதிய ஆர்யாவை வயதான மேக்கப்போடு காட்டாமல் விட்டதற்கு கோடி நன்றிகள்.

அக்காலச் சென்னையைக்  கண் முன் நிறுத்த, இயக்குனர் எடுத்துக் கொண்ட முயற்சிகளில் கொஞ்சம் அக்கால வட்டார வழக்கில் கதாபாத்திரங்களைப்  பேச வைக்க முனைந்திருக்கலாம். சில குறைகள் இருந்தாலும் நிறைவான நிறைகளால் நம் மனதில் பதிகிறது. இப்படத்தை சுதந்திரப் போராட்டப் படமாக பார்க்காமல், சுதந்திரத்தின் போது நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு காதல் கதையாக மட்டுமே பார்க்கவும். படம் முடிந்த பிறகு, நாமும் மதரசபட்டினத்தில் வாழ்ந்திருக்கலாமே என்ற ஆதங்கம் எழுவதைத் தவிர்க்க முடியாது. A Must Watch and not to be missed. Enjoy the journey from Chennai to Madrasapattinam.

பிற்சேர்க்கை : இயக்குனர் விஜய் தனது மூன்றாவது படத்தில் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்து, எதிர்பார்ப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளார். அடுத்த படத்தில் அதனைத் தக்க வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

Happy B’day K.B!

K.Balachander, the Godfather of Super Stars of Tamil Cinema. He is the real Star Maker who has introduced and moulded so many biggies of Tinseltown, from Rajnikanth, Kamalhassan, Sridevi, Sripriya to Vivek, Prakash Raj. He’s the man who inspired me to aspire film making. I was taken aback by his classics and became a die-hard fan of him even at my early teens. I can proudly say that I’m the community owner of most of K.Balachander films in Orkut.

My mother is a great fan of KB and she introduced his films to me. It was his teleserial Kaiyalavu Manasu made me watch his movies. I was stunned on watching his Aval oru Thodarkadhai. I was just 14 then. The age to understand and analyze cinema. Long ago I read Director Vasanth’s interview in a Tamil Weekly that he was stunned by the climax of “Aval Oru Thodarkadhai” and returned home by walk. He forgot his cycle in the Theatre itself. Arangetram gave me a shock since it was not a digestable subject even in 90s. Apoorva Ragangal has such a plot that only the thespian could handle. None touch that kinda film till now. But watching KB Movies differentiated me from my friends who were not even aware of his name. Once my aunt’s father asked me about the film I liked at that time and he was surprised when I said Thamarai Nenjam. I was in my 8th Std vacation then. Thanks to Sun Movies channel in which I watched most of the KB films. I would have watched Azhagan more than 100 times.  Sindhu Bhairavi, Moondru Mudichu, Thillu Mullu, Varumaiyin Niram Sigappu come next. Even during my 10th Public Exams, I was watching his films in the afternoons with my mom. But Parthale Paravasam and Poi are craps from him. I still have the letter written to him after watching the former but it wasn’t posted like Madhavan’s letter in 3 Idiots.

His characterization is mindblowing. Even if a character appears for just 2 min, it would create an impact. Such immortal characters he has created. Esp his protagonists are women. Kavitha, Lalitha, Sindhu, Bhairavi, Anu, Kannamma, Kalki and more. I developed an obsession to his characters which are not normal but thoroughly enjoyable. My orkut profile says I’m a cocktail of K.B film characters. I still don’t know being a KB fan and watching his films more I got those characteristics or since I have them in me, I love his films. I think my mom would have watched a lot of KB films when I was in her womb. After Director Sridhar, KB showed a different view of Tamil Cinema and made people watch movies for the Director. Hence he’s called Iyakkunar Sigaram (Peak among the Directors)

He’s the pioneer of Mega Serials. When he has given loads of cult films, he entered television. He started Rayil Sneham, a weekly serial and then Raghuvamsam, a daily serial which was telecast for around 150 episodes. When TV is jammed with such serials he left TV and came back to Theatre and Stage Plays where he started his career. I didnt get the opportunity when he staged his play Pournami. Waiting for yet another stage play. He still makes everyone jaw dropping with his new ventures. He turns 82 today. But no one can say he’s 82 years old. But he is 82 years young. Even in the Grand Finale of Nalaya Iyakkunar, KB’s presence was so enigmatic. I wish my mentor a very Happy Birthday and to entertain us more. I changed my caller tune to “Sangeetha Swarangal…” from Azhagan as a gift from my side to K.B. Good to know that today is B’day of two more legends Tom Hanks and Late Guru Dutt, legendary film maker.

P.S: Kamalhaasan announced at the Music launch of Unnaipol Oruvan that he has planned to direct a film with K.B in the lead role. I wish him to do it asap.

Ajith’s 50th Film

Ajith is all set to start his 50th film. If you think it’s Gautam Menon’s “Thuppariyum Anand”, you are wrong. Venkat Prabhu is gonna direct the Ultimate Star. The title is so captivating – “Mangatha”, a popular card game normally played locally. Dhayanidhi Azhagiri is gonna produce under Cloud Nine Films with Yuvan Shankar Raja scoring the Music for Vairamuthu’s lyrics. Like the title, the first still too pulls the attention with Ajith’s face (thala?) in a Spade. Hope it would be a turning point in Ajith’s dull career that would catapult him to hit the BO. It’s to be noted that Vijay’s 50th film was a disaster. So Ajith plays a safe game (Mangatha)

Venkat Prabhu, who played a second fiddle to heroes in films like April Madhathil, Unnai Saran Adaindhen, made the film industry look at him with his excellent debut Chennai-600028. His next venture Saroja was also BO Hit and he hit the hat trick with His recent Goa. He has his own cast and crew who are not so popular actors. Jai, Shiva, Vaibhav, Premji, Vijayalakshmi, Aravind Akash, Sampath who are talented yet not A-Star artistes.  The hero of his movies is always Yuvan. I wonder how he would direct Ajith for whom he has to make compromises to satisfy the so called Ajith fans. Humour too is not Ajith’s cuppa. Let’s keep the fingers crossed. It is all about Venkat Prabhu’s game.

Pazhamudhir Cholai – My Recording

Since I got some good comments for my previous recording, I’m here to share my new recording. It’s a wish from a good friend Aishwarya to sing this song as she felt this would suit my thick and soft voice (as she said). The song is “Pazhamudhir cholai…” from the movie Varusham 16 directed by one of my favourite directors Fazil.

This is a brilliant composition by Maestro Ilayaraja and crooned excellently by K.J.Jesudass. It’s a semi-classical song based on the raga Hari Kamboji. I’ve tried my best.

My Latest Crush

Shruthi Haasan- The perfect blend of Kamal Haasan and Sarika. A rare combination of beauty and talent. I didnt like her when she came to the lime light. I just hated her still in an interview she gave in SAVVY. She didn’t impress me with her singing when she made a debut in Adiye Kolludhe in Vaaranam Aayiram. I just felt her voice like Kamal Haasan singing in female voice like the young voice of Avvai Shanmugi.As a musician, UPO was just okay. She irked me with her Bollywood debut in Luck opposite Imran Khan. Her bikini and low waist jeans didn’t make anything to me. I hated her to the core when she appeared and screamed Thamizh mozhi Thamizh mozhi in Semmozhi Anthem.

But I was bowled over on seeing Shruthi Haasan in the stills of Ezhaam Arivu, her Tamil Debut with Suriya directed by by A.R.Murugadoss. She is absolutely stunning and extremely gorgeous. I wasn’t disturbed when she sported and bikini exposing her vital stats. But the attire she was wearing in the pooja of 7aam arivu made me love her head over heels.
