Today is a Special New Moon Day. It’s called Mahalaya Amaavaasai in Tamil Nadu. This day, the people worship their ancestors (Pitru Pooja) and those who died in the family. This day is the starting of Navarathri. Nine days from the Amaavasa is celebrated as Navarathri. The tenth day is Dussehra or Vijaya Dasami. Bengalis celebrate this day as Mahalaya, MOHAALOYA in fact. This day is considered as the starting of Durga Pooja, the most famous festival of Bengal. In mythology, the goddess MAHAMAYA was crated by the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) to kill the dangerous demon Mahishasura. He was killed by Durga on the eighth day from today. It’s celebrated as DURGAASHTAMI, the main day of Durga Pooja. Bengalis use to chant the Mahishasura Mardhini sloka on Mahalaya. The artisans draw the eyes for the Durga idols that are to be exhibited in the Puja pandals.
P.S:2 Tamilians keep golu on this day. I love that tradition and always wished my mom to keep golu in our home. But she told it’s not our custom. Hope atleast my wife would fulfill my wish.
